GEOPOLITICAL CHALLENGES OF UKRAINE’S STRATEGIC POSITION: REASSESSING NEUTRALITY, SOVEREIGNTY, AND REGIONAL STABILITY IN CONTEMPORARY INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Abstract
This paper examines Ukraine’s strategic geopolitical position within the broader context of contemporary international affairs by analyzing the challenges associated with neutrality, sovereignty, regional security, and diplomatic engagement. The study evaluates Ukraine’s role as a critical state situated between European integration aspirations and regional geopolitical pressures. It explores the historical and contemporary factors shaping Ukraine’s foreign policy orientation and assesses the implications of neutrality as a strategic option for peace and stability. The paper applies a qualitative analytical approach grounded in international relations theory, diplomatic analysis, and geopolitical assessment. The findings indicate that while neutrality has occasionally been proposed as a diplomatic solution, its practical implementation faces substantial political, legal, and strategic challenges. The research further highlights the competing interests of major international actors and the significance of multilateral diplomacy in ensuring sustainable peace. The study concludes that Ukraine’s future stability depends on a carefully balanced framework that safeguards sovereignty, supports regional cooperation, and promotes constructive international engagement.
